This live stream bass practice session is built around a complete, structured warm-up routine titled 84 Scales in 12 Ways. In this hour-long guided practice, I take you step by step through a system I designed to help bass players practice scales more thoroughly, creatively, and efficiently.
The core of the routine is simple but powerful: all seven modes in all twelve musical keys, giving us a total of 84 scales. Rather than running scales mindlessly, the session is organized into four thematic groups, each designed to challenge how you think about fingerboard movement, patterns, and musical awareness.
Across the twelve keys, the modes are practiced in a variety of focused ways, including two-string limitations, ascending and descending modes, traditional and reverse modal order, two-octave scales, triplet subdivisions, and other unique scale challenges. Each variation is intentional, encouraging deeper understanding, stronger technique, and better control over the fretboard.
This practice session is designed to inspire bass players to break out of repetitive practice habits and explore new, creative ways to work on scales, modes, and technique. The goal is not just repetition, but learning how to practice more effectively—developing ideas and challenges you can return to and adapt for years to come.
You can download the entire practice session using the link above, which will take you to my full collection of downloadable materials. This allows you to revisit the routine, practice at your own pace, and integrate these ideas into your regular bass practice.
